On the meaning of the Latin CARISSIME NEPOS
Our story is complex. It follows the history of the Kříž family,its connection with the Erna house on Zelný trh (Cabbage Market) and the pub, which was in some form always part of it. The center of the story is Martin Kříž. Let’s leave aside his scientific legacy. Above all, he loved his family, children, and grandchildren. With one of them, a young high school student, Boris, he even corresponded in Latin! In his letters, he addressed him: Carissime nepos! My dear grandson! We always liked Martin’s words so much so that we placed them under his bust in the restaurant’s lounge and on the facade of our house. Here, however, the Latin address – to some extend also Kříž’s life credo – does not only mean “my dear grandson”, but also “dear successor, you who is interested in the life that I led (in my study and at the pub table), and in the work that I passed down to you.” But today we attribute an even broader meaning to this Latin combination: Dear visitor to U KŘÍŽŮ, we welcome you warmly!
